What is Holistic SEO?

by Kristen Koester-Smith July 2, 2017

SEO stands for search engine optimization. If your site has good SEO, you will appear at the top of google searches. This is incredibly important in the age of Google, where most people hunting for information will only look at the top 3 organic (non-paid) search results. Google’s main purpose is to find the information people are looking for and give it to them. As an web content writer, it’s my job to make sure Google can find my client’s website or articles and give it to the audience searching for it!

Holistic SEO is an approach to SEO which entails:

  • providing quality content based on the chosen keywords for your website
  • ensuring content is readable
  • improving site speed
  • creating backlinks
  • formatting pictures correctly

All of these things go into how Google ranks your site. Google’s algorithm changes all the time, so it’s best to focus on building the best site possible by employing holistic SEO and then fine-tuning for specific algorithyms later.

What are keywords?

Keywords are terms that people might be searching for when looking for products or information that you provide. When choosing keywords, we should consider our site’s purpose and be as specific as possible, using longtail keywords.

For example, if I’m a yoga instructor, a lot of the content on my site will probably be about yoga. However, the chance of me ranking in the top 3 in a search about “yoga” is virtually zero! Instead, I could pick a longtail keyword such as “yin yoga instructor in Spokane, Washington.” The probability of ranking high in a search for this keyword is much greater. In addition, my likelihood of conversion is higher as well. This is because someone searching for “yin yoga instructor in Spokane, Washington” is actually interested in my product, not just my genre.

Keywords and Content

All the content on your site should be reflected in your keywords, so that those searching for you can find you! Choosing keywords can be a long and laborious process considering searchability, chance of conversion, and chance of ranking. Even a small site can have 50 keywords! I offer a keyword research in my SEO Writing Services package if you’d like me to do your keyword research for you.  If you already have your keywords and are just looking for content, then perhaps the content only package is right for you.
